Fee Components

The Fees That Can Reduce Modeled Portfolio Growth

Investment costs may come from funds, advisory services, platforms, retirement plans or other recurring charges. This calculator combines only the annual percentage fees entered by the user.

Fund Expense Ratio

An annual percentage charged within a fund and reflected in the investment's net performance.

Advisory Fee

A recurring percentage charged for portfolio management or financial-advisory services.

Platform Fee

A percentage or flat charge associated with using an investment platform or account service.

Plan Administration Fee

A retirement-plan or account administration charge entered separately from fund expenses.

Other Recurring Fee

An additional annual percentage cost included only when the user chooses to add it.

Flat Annual Fee

A fixed dollar cost modeled separately because it does not remain a constant percentage of the portfolio.

Process

Compare Investment Fee Impact in Three Steps

1

Build the Portfolio Baseline

Enter current assets, monthly contributions, gross return and the projection timeline.

2

Add the Fee Structures

Enter fund, advisory, platform and other recurring fees for each comparison scenario.

3

Compare Value and Timing

Review net return, ending-value difference, Coast FIRE delay and the equivalent extra contribution.

Calculation

How Investment Fees Change the Net Return

Gross Return−Combined Fees=Net Return
Net Return applied throughout the full projection

The net return is applied throughout the projection, so the effect compounds across both the contribution phase and any later coast phase.

Results

Understand Your Investment Fee Impact Result

Combined Annual Fee

The total recurring annual percentage created from the included fund, advisor, platform and other percentage fees.

Net Investment Return

The modeled annual return remaining after the shared fee methodology is applied.

Ending-Value Difference

The difference between the lower-fee and higher-fee projected portfolio values.

Direct Modeled Fees

The cumulative percentage-based and flat fees deducted by the model over the projection.

Lost Compound Growth

The additional ending-value difference associated with growth that could not occur after fees were removed.

Coast FIRE Delay

The modeled difference between the two estimated Coast FIRE dates under otherwise identical assumptions.

Milestones

How Fees May Change the Estimated Coast FIRE Date

A lower net return may require the portfolio to receive contributions for longer before it reaches the age-adjusted Coast FIRE threshold.

The delay is a constant-assumption projection and does not predict the actual date when a portfolio will reach Coast FIRE.

TodayEstimated Coast FIRE DateRetirement Age

Lower-Fee Scenario

Reaches Coast FIRE threshold sooner with higher net compound growth.

Higher-Fee Scenario

May require additional contribution months before reaching the same threshold.

Solver

What Additional Contribution Matches the Lower-Fee Result?

The solver estimates the additional monthly deposit required for the higher-fee scenario to match either the lower-fee ending value or its estimated Coast FIRE date.

Higher-Fee Monthly+Extra Contribution=Lower-Fee Result
This is a mathematical comparison, not a recommendation to increase contributions.
Timeline

See Fee Impact During Contribution and Coast Phases

Contribution Phase

  • Monthly contributions build the portfolio alongside investment growth
  • Recurring fees reduce the modeled net return each period
  • Fee drag compounds alongside portfolio growth

Coast Phase

  • Contributions stop — the portfolio grows only through investment returns
  • Recurring percentage fees continue reducing modeled growth
  • Fees on a larger balance mean greater absolute dollar drag
Breakpoints

See When Fee Differences Cross Key Thresholds

The breakpoint table tests a range of annual fees and identifies the first level at which selected value or Coast FIRE timing thresholds are crossed.

Example

One Portfolio Under Two Fee Structures

Shared Baseline

  • Same starting portfolio
  • Same monthly contributions
  • Same gross-return assumption
  • Same projection timeline

Only Fees Differ

  • Different combined annual fee
  • Different net return used
  • Different ending portfolio value
  • Different estimated Coast FIRE date

The result difference comes from the recurring fees and the compound growth no longer earned on amounts removed by those fees.

Applications

When the Investment Fee Impact Calculator Is Useful

Comparing Two Funds

Use it to compare recurring expense ratios while keeping the portfolio and gross-return assumptions unchanged.

Adding an Advisor Fee

Use it to see how a recurring advisory percentage changes the modeled net return and ending portfolio.

Combining Several Fees

Use it to total multiple recurring percentage costs without hiding their individual components.

Reviewing Coast FIRE Timing

Use it to compare the estimated Coast FIRE dates produced by two fee structures.

Testing an Equivalent Contribution

Use it to calculate the additional monthly deposit associated with matching a lower-fee scenario.

Finding Fee Breakpoints

Use it to identify the tested fee level where a selected value or timing threshold is first crossed.

Limitations

Avoid These Investment Fee Calculation Mistakes

Adding Flat Fees as Percentages

A fixed annual dollar charge should not be added directly to recurring percentage fees.

Counting the Same Fee Twice

Do not add a fee separately when it is already included in another entered all-in fee.

Confusing Percentage Points

A change from 0.50% to 1.00% is 0.50 percentage points, not 0.50%.

Calling Value Difference Fees Paid

The ending-value difference includes direct fees and the compound growth not earned after those fees were removed.

Changing Return Between Scenarios

A fee-only comparison should hold the gross-return assumption constant.

Ignoring Fees During the Coast Phase

Recurring percentage fees continue to affect modeled growth after contributions stop.

Treating the Result as Service Evaluation

The calculator compares financial effects and does not measure the quality or value of an advisor, platform or fund.

Treating the Projection as Certain

Actual returns, fees, contributions and portfolio values may differ from the constant-assumption model.

Model Limitations

No advisor service evaluationNo fund recommendationsNo personal tax calculationsNo automatic trading costsNo loads or commissionsNo performance fee modelingNo return-sequence modelingNo Coast FIRE date guarantee

FAQ

Investment Fee and Portfolio Impact Questions

How does the Investment Fee Impact Calculator work?

The calculator projects the same assets, contributions and gross return under different fee structures. It then compares net return, ending value, Coast FIRE timing and the contribution needed to match the lower-fee result.

What is a combined investment fee?

It is the sum of the recurring annual percentage fees included by the user, such as a fund expense ratio, advisory fee and platform percentage. Flat charges remain separate.

How do fees reduce investment returns?

Recurring fees reduce the modeled return applied to the portfolio. They also reduce the amount remaining in the account to earn compound growth in later periods.

Is lost portfolio value the same as fees paid?

No. The ending-value difference may include both direct modeled fee deductions and investment growth that was not earned after those amounts left the portfolio.

Can fees delay Coast FIRE?

Under the calculator’s constant assumptions, a lower net return may move the estimated Coast FIRE date later. The displayed delay is a model result, not a prediction of actual market timing.

What is the extra-contribution result?

It is the additional modeled monthly deposit required for the higher-fee scenario to match the selected lower-fee ending value or Coast FIRE date.

What happens when fees exceed the gross return?

The model produces a zero or negative net return before inflation. The calculator shows a warning and continues only when the entered percentage values remain mathematically valid.

Does the calculator tell me whether a fee is worth paying?

No. It compares modeled financial outcomes and does not evaluate service quality, advice, investment performance, suitability or the value received for a fee.

Investment Fee Impact Calculator Methodology

Last Reviewed: 2024-05-15Version: 1.0

Calculation Engine: This calculator applies each fee scenario to the same starting portfolio, contributions, gross-return assumption and timeline. It compares the resulting net returns, ending values and Coast FIRE milestones.

Combined Fees: Recurring annual percentage fees are combined only when the user includes them. Flat dollar fees remain separate and are not treated as a permanent percentage of assets.

Value Difference: The ending-value difference is not identical to fees paid. It includes direct modeled fees and the investment growth that did not occur after those fees were removed.

Coast FIRE Delay: The Coast FIRE delay compares two modeled milestone dates under constant assumptions. It does not predict actual investment performance or retirement timing.

No Advice Statement: The calculator does not determine whether a fund, platform, advisor or fee arrangement is suitable, reasonable or worth its cost.

Disclaimer: This calculator provides educational estimates and does not provide investment, tax, legal, retirement or financial-advisory advice. It does not recommend a product, provider, fee level or contribution change.
