Recapture Tax Warning
Modifying a SoSEPP before the required commitment period ends can trigger retroactive 10% penalty taxes plus interest on all prior distributions.
Complete Account Depletion Rule
If your account runs out of funds while adhering to an IRS SEPP method, the reduced final payment does not trigger recapture tax.

How the 72t Calculator Works
IRS Early Access Exception
Section 72(t) generally imposes a 10% penalty on early retirement withdrawals, but provides an exception for a properly established series of substantially equal periodic payments (SEPP).
Calculation Mechanics
The calculator combines account balance, current age, IRS life-expectancy tables, and permitted interest rates to evaluate the RMD, Fixed Amortization, and Fixed Annuitization methods.
Payment Patterns
RMD recalculates distributions annually, creating a dynamic payment path. Amortization and Annuitization calculate guaranteed level annual payments over the life-expectancy period.
Rate vs Portfolio Return
The SEPP interest rate determines your IRS payment amount. Your expected portfolio return is kept separate to model future account growth and depletion.
How Long Must 72(t) SEPP Payments Continue?
Later of 5 Years or Age 59½
A SEPP series must remain unmodified until the later of two statutory dates: 5 full years from your 1st payment or the date you reach age 59½.
When Does It End?
Starting before age 54½ generally requires staying in the series until age 59½. Starting closer to 59½ requires continuing past 59½ until 5 full years elapse.
Exact Calendar Dates
The exact payment date determines compliance. Entering exact birth & payment dates reveals which rule controls your modeled commitment end date.
Strict Continuity
Getting a new job, no longer needing funds, or reaching the 5th payment does not end the SEPP if the statutory date hasn't been reached.
The Three 72(t) SEPP Calculation Methods
Required Minimum Distribution
Divides remaining account balance by your age factor each year. Future annual payments vary based on portfolio growth and age.
Fixed Amortization
Amortizes initial balance over life expectancy at permitted interest rate. Calculates a level annual payment that remains constant.
Fixed Annuitization
Divides initial balance by an IRS mortality annuity factor. Produces a level annual payment guaranteed throughout the series.
What Interest Rate Can a 72(t) Calculation Use?
Notice 2022-6 Rate Limit
The rate cannot exceed the greater of 5.00% or 120% of the federal mid-term rate (AFR) for either of the two months preceding your 1st payment.
Dynamic Ceiling Check
5% is a statutory floor, not a permanent ceiling. When market AFR rates rise above 5%, the permitted interest rate ceiling increases accordingly.
One Retirement Account Per SEPP
Single Account Basis
Each SEPP is tied to one specific account. Multiple account balances cannot be merged to compute a single annual payment.
Multiple Series Allowed
Separate SEPPs may be set up for separate accounts, but each series must be calculated and tracked independently.
Strict Lockout Rules
Additions, extra withdrawals, or partial transfers after establishment can break compliance and trigger recapture tax.
What Happens If a SEPP Is Modified?
Recapture Tax & Interest Penalty
Modifying distributions before the commitment period ends retroactively triggers the 10% early withdrawal tax plus interest on all prior SEPP payments.
Notice 2022-6 One-Time Switch
Fixed Amortization or Annuitization plans may switch once to the RMD method in a later year without penalty. Subsequent payments must follow RMD.

72(t) SEPP Questions & Answers
What is a 72t calculator?
A 72t calculator estimates substantially equal periodic payments under Section 72(t). It compares IRS calculation methods using your account balance, age, life-expectancy assumptions and permitted interest rate, then models the required payment period and account balance.
How is a 72(t) SEPP payment calculated?
IRS Notice 2022-6 describes the required minimum distribution, fixed amortization and fixed annuitization methods. RMD divides the applicable balance by a life-expectancy factor, amortization calculates a level payment over life expectancy, and annuitization uses an IRS mortality-based annuity factor.
What interest rate can I use for a 72(t) calculation?
For fixed amortization and fixed annuitization, the selected rate may not exceed the greater of 5% or 120% of the federal mid-term rate for either of the two months immediately preceding the first payment month.
Is 5% always the maximum 72(t) interest rate?
No. Notice 2022-6 provides a 5% floor for the permitted maximum-rate calculation. When the relevant 120% federal mid-term rate is above 5%, the permitted ceiling can also be above 5%.
How long do I have to take 72(t) SEPP payments?
The series generally must remain unmodified until the later of the fifth anniversary of the first SEPP payment or the date you reach age 59½. Starting close to age 59½ can therefore require payments beyond age 59½.
Can I take 72(t) payments monthly?
IRS guidance allows the required annual amount to be taken in installments such as annual, quarterly or monthly payments, subject to the account custodian or plan trustee. The installments for the year should total the required annual amount.
Can a 72(t) SEPP use a 401(k)?
Potentially. Current IRS guidance requires separation from service with the employer maintaining certain qualified plans before SEPP payments begin for the exception to apply. Employer-plan distribution rules also need to permit the distributions.
Can I use 72(t) with an IRA while I am still working?
The employer-separation condition described by the IRS for certain qualified employer plans does not apply in the same way to IRAs. Other SEPP requirements still apply to the IRA series.
Can I combine two IRAs for one 72(t) calculation?
No. IRS guidance states that each SoSEPP is determined for one single account. Separate SoSEPPs may potentially be established for separate accounts, but each series must be calculated and managed independently.
Can I add money to my SEPP IRA after starting?
Current IRS guidance generally does not allow additions to the account after the SoSEPP is established, other than changes resulting from investment experience. Account transfers, additional distributions and rollover activity can also affect the modification rules.
Can I change from fixed amortization to the RMD method?
Yes. Notice 2022-6 allows a one-time switch from fixed amortization or fixed annuitization to the RMD method in a later distribution year without that switch itself being treated as a modification. Afterward, the RMD method must continue.
Can I change from the RMD method to fixed amortization?
The special one-time method-change rule runs in the other direction: from a fixed method to RMD. A later change away from RMD can constitute a modification under the applicable rules.
What happens if I stop 72(t) payments early?
If the series is modified before the required period ends, the IRS can impose the 10% additional tax on applicable distributions and a recapture tax for prior distributions that previously used the SEPP exception, plus interest.
What if the SEPP account runs out of money?
IRS guidance provides special treatment when assets are completely depleted while following a qualifying SEPP method. A reduced final payment caused by complete depletion is not automatically treated as a modification.
Do I still pay income tax on 72(t) withdrawals?
The SEPP exception concerns the 10% additional early-distribution tax. Taxable traditional IRA or employer-plan distributions may still be included in ordinary income and subject to applicable income taxes.
How much money do I need in an IRA to generate $40,000 a year with 72(t)?
The required balance depends on your age, selected life-expectancy basis, SEPP method and permitted interest rate. Use the target-income solver to compare the modeled account balance associated with a $40,000 annual payment under each method.
What is the difference between 72(t) and the Rule of 55?
72(t) SEPP uses a structured series of substantially equal periodic payments. The Rule of 55 is a separate separation-from-service exception for applicable employer-plan distributions. Eligibility, account types and payment flexibility differ.
Does getting another job allow me to stop a 72(t) plan?
Starting another job does not by itself change the statutory SEPP duration. The series generally must remain unmodified until the later of the required five-year anniversary or age 59½ unless another applicable rule applies.
