How Does Relocating Affect Coast FIRE?
Moving can change more than your monthly spending. Compare your current plan with a new location, including income, living costs, moving expenses and the retirement budget you expect after the move.
When Does the Move Happen?
Your Coast FIRE + Relocation Plan
Post-move working-stage annual living costs
Total estimated moving, relocation & setup expenses
Post-move net monthly income after taxes & deductions
One-Time Moving Cost FundingSpecify whether move costs come from investments or separate cash
How Much of the Moving Cost Comes From Investments Already Included in Your Coast FIRE Portfolio?
If moving expenses come from separate cash that was never included in Current Investments, they should not also reduce the Coast FIRE portfolio. Reduce investments only by the amount actually withdrawn from assets used in the Coast calculation.

Use Cost-of-Living Data as Context, Not Your Budget
Regional Price Parities (RPP) from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) provide regional price-level differences. They summarize average price levels across states and metro areas, but do not know your housing choice, commuting pattern, or healthcare needs. Always enter your own expected destination budget.

How Relocation Can Change Coast FIRE
A move can change Coast FIRE through one-time moving costs, current income, current living expenses, retirement contributions, and future retirement spending. A cheaper location does not automatically produce an earlier Coast date if income falls substantially or moving costs consume invested assets. Likewise, a higher-cost move does not automatically derail Coast FIRE if retirement spending and contributions remain compatible with the plan.
Cost of Living Is Not One Percentage
Regional cost-of-living measures summarize overall differences in price levels. Actual household spending can differ because housing, transportation, healthcare, taxes, insurance, family needs, and travel do not change identically. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Price Parities provide regional context; this calculator uses the destination budget entered by the user.
Moving Now and Retiring Somewhere Else Are Different Plans
Moving during the Coast phase can change earnings, living costs, retirement contributions, and investment balance. Moving only at retirement leaves today's work and savings path unchanged while altering the future retirement-spending target. The calculator models these options separately so you can see how relocation timing affects your timeline.
Questions About Relocating & Coast FIRE
Answers to common questions about geoarbitrage, pay cuts, moving costs, cost-of-living indices, and international relocation.
Does moving to a lower-cost area automatically lower my Coast FIRE number?▼
Only if the move changes the retirement spending you expect the portfolio to support. Lower current living costs can also affect contributions and the Coast date without necessarily changing the retirement target.
What if I take a pay cut when I relocate?▼
Compare the new take-home income with your post-move living costs and planned retirement contribution. A lower salary can still produce similar cash flow when expenses also fall, but the calculator should use your actual estimates.
Should moving expenses come out of my Coast FIRE investments?▼
Only when those expenses are actually paid from assets already included in Current Investments. Costs paid from separate cash should not also be subtracted from the Coast portfolio.
Should I use a cost-of-living index to calculate my new retirement budget?▼
Use it as context rather than automatically scaling the entire budget. Housing, healthcare, transportation, taxes and other expenses can change by different amounts, so enter a spending estimate that reflects the planned location.
What if I plan to move only after I retire?▼
Keep the current Coast-phase income and contribution path separate from the future relocation. The destination can change expected retirement spending without necessarily changing today's earnings or living costs.
Can moving somewhere more expensive still work with Coast FIRE?▼
Yes as a modeled scenario. Higher retirement spending can increase the Coast target, while income, contributions, housing or other assumptions may change in either direction. Compare the complete before-and-after plan.
Can I use this calculator for moving to another country?▼
You can model user-entered spending, income and moving costs, but the page should not estimate immigration rules, foreign taxes, exchange-rate risk or healthcare eligibility. Those require separate country-specific research.
