The Bridge in Sequence

Work Reduces → Assets Fill the Gap → New Income Begins

The bridge is not a single event. It is a sequence of transitions that each change the size of the annual spending gap.

01

Work Reduces

Full employment income falls to part-time, consulting or a reduced role.

02

Employment Income Ends

Employment income stops entirely, increasing the annual spending gap.

03

Accessible Assets Fill the Gap

Cash, taxable brokerage and unlocked accounts fund the remaining shortfall.

04

New Income Sources Begin

Pension, Social Security or annuity payments reduce the annual drawdown.

05

Bridge Period Ends

The last modeled income source begins. The bridge analysis is complete.

The Math Behind Each Bridge Year

How the Year-by-Year Cash Flow Is Modeled

Annual Shortfall Formula

Gap = (Spending × (1 + Inflation)Y) − Available Income

This remaining gap must be funded by withdrawing from accessible assets. Any remaining asset balance then grows by its net return.

1
Inflation-Adjusted Spending
Annual spending rises by the entered rate
2
− Available Income That Year
Counted only from its entered start age
3
= Annual Cash-Flow Gap
Shortfall that must be funded from assets
4
− Withdrawals from Assets
Assets used only after their access age
5
= Uncovered Shortfall (if any)
Spending gap not covered by assets or income
Income is counted only from the age entered for that source — not from retirement day one.
Asset balances are used only after the user-entered access age for each bucket.
Closing assets include modeled growth from the user-entered return and fee assumptions.
The model applies constant return assumptions. Actual investment results will differ.
How to Use It

Build a Bridge Plan in Three Steps

  1. 1

Set your current age, work reduction age, full work exit age and bridge end age.

  2. 2

Add employment income, then income sources for pension, Social Security and any other benefits — each with a start age.

  3. 3

In Mode A (Projection), add asset buckets with balances and access ages. In Mode B (Solver), the calculator estimates required starting capital.

What It Does Not Model

Calculator Limitations to Review

  • Does not calculate personal income taxes or net spendable income.
  • Does not determine withdrawal penalties, account eligibility or benefit rules.
  • Does not calculate Social Security or pension benefit amounts — those are user entries.
  • Does not model sequence-of-returns risk or variable market performance.
  • Does not model healthcare or any other specific expense category.
  • A fully funded bridge projection is not investment, tax, legal, pension or Social Security advice.
When to Use This Calculator

Retirement Bridge Scenarios This Tool Handles

Retiring before Social Security

Model the years before the selected claiming age.

Pension starts after work ends

Bridge the gap between work exit and first pension payment.

Reducing work gradually

Model part-time income before full work exit.

Accounts unlock at different ages

Use each asset from its access age.

Spending changes during the bridge

Add spending phases for healthcare or housing transitions.

Testing accessible-asset depletion

See whether bridge assets last until later income starts.

Avoid False Precision

Common Bridge-Planning Mistakes

These pitfalls can silently distort an otherwise careful bridge projection.

Counting benefits too early

Only income from its entered start age is counted in that year.

Counting restricted accounts

Assets are used only after their user-entered access age.

Ignoring spending inflation

Fixed spending assumptions can understate later bridge withdrawals.

Separating income start dates

Different sources begin at different ages — not all at once.

Ignoring asset depletion

A total portfolio can hide the year accessible bridge funds run out.

Treating gross as net income

The calculator does not estimate income taxes or net spendable income.

Bridge Years Calculator FAQs

What are bridge years in retirement planning?

Bridge years are the years between a reduction in employment income and the point when later retirement income — pension, Social Security, annuity — or additional assets become accessible. The bridge is typically funded by part-time income, cash, taxable investments or other accessible assets.

How does the Bridge Years Calculator model annual cash flow?

The calculator processes each year from the current age to the bridge end age. It applies inflation-adjusted spending, counts each income source only from its entered start age, and uses each asset bucket only from its entered access age. The remaining gap is covered by accessible-asset withdrawals.

What is required bridge capital?

Required bridge capital is the estimated accessible starting balance needed to fund all modeled annual shortfalls through the bridge end age. The calculator uses binary search with a $1 tolerance to find this amount.

Can I model multiple income start dates?

Yes. Pension, Social Security, part-time income, annuity and other sources can each begin at a different age. Each is applied only from its entered start age.

What happens when accessible assets are depleted?

The calculator marks the first uncovered year and shows the remaining annual shortfall not covered by income or accessible assets.

How does inflation affect bridge capital requirements?

Later bridge years may require larger withdrawals when spending rises faster than the income sources available during those years.

Can I model account access ages?

Yes. Each asset bucket has a user-entered access age. The calculator uses that bucket only from that age. Access ages are planning assumptions; the calculator does not determine taxes, penalties or eligibility.

Does a fully funded bridge mean I can retire?

No. The result is an educational cash-flow projection based on entered assumptions. It does not account for taxes, healthcare, market sequences, benefit eligibility or any other personal planning factor.

Methodology and Trust

How This Bridge Cash-Flow Model Works

  • Methodology version: 1.0.0. Last reviewed: July 2026.
  • Results recalculate in the browser as inputs change. No data leaves the device.
  • The solver uses binary search with a $1 tolerance to find required bridge capital.
  • Spending is inflation-adjusted each bridge year from the entered rate.
  • Income is applied only from its entered start age. Assets are used only from their access age.
  • Constant return assumptions are applied within each bucket. Sequence-of-returns risk is not modeled.
  • Access ages are user-entered planning assumptions — not legal, tax or eligibility determinations.
  • This is an educational cash-flow estimate, not investment, tax, legal, pension or Social Security advice.
